It is nice to see that Borinquen Home Improvement Center was featured on your site. The family business that was founded by my father Misael Fernandez Sr. was started in 1978 under the name “Borinquen Hardware”. It was in 1980-1981 that we expanded and Borinquen Home Improvement Center Inc was created. I wanted to share a bit of history in regards to the photo you have posted. The Indian Head was the original logo of the
” Sioux Meat Market”, which closed its doors between 1979 - 1980. My father purchased the building soon after for the purpose of expanding and decided to maintain the original logo in part for it’s Historical Value. Speaking of history - 532-534 Jersey Avenue was the location of the “Jersey Avenue Horse and Buggy Garage” back in the late 1800’s. The Atlantic and Pacific Grocery Stores purchased this site and established the first ” A&P Supermarket”, which was later moved further north (Palisades Area).

Hey Misael- Thanks so much for sharing your family history and valuable local history as well. Glad to have documented this iconic image. I will post more of what I took that day soon.

Best,
Frank

Borinquen Home Improvement is up for sale because the owner Misael Fernandez Sr. did not pay his taxes. He hired immigrants to work for less than minimum wage and even fired his own son. He sued his wife of many years for divorce and attempted to bilk her out of $ from the sale of their home. Look it up.
