Notice the spelling “refeshing.” - Sandra Walker
Sandra Walker is an American watercolorist living in the UK who paints fading ads. Here is one of the working snapshots she took while touring the US scouting for signs. The Omega Oil sign was also one of her works. An example of her Quaker Oats ad from DC is also posted on this blog.

I received this forward from my friend and fellow educator Estelle and I am posting this [almost] verbatim.
This video is pretty impressive. Well worth the time to watch it. Pass it on - you could save a life.
This video is only 34 seconds long but if you’re ever in this situation it will save your kitchen, house and most of all your life, if you follow the advice. Watch this video and learn what not to use (and what to do)to put out a grease fire. At the Charleston Navy base at the Fire Fighting Training school- they demonstrate this with a deep fat fryer set on the fire field. An instructor would don a fire suit and using an 8 oz cup at the end of a 10 foot pole toss water onto the grease fire. The results got the attention of the students.
The water, being heavier than the oil, sinks to the bottom where it instantly becomes superheated. The explosive force of the steam blows the burning oil up and out. On the open field, it became a thirty foot high fireball that resembles a nuclear blast. Inside the confines of a kitchen, the fire ball hits the ceiling and fills the entire room.
Also do not throw sugar or flour on a grease fire. One cup creates the explosive force of two sticks of dynamite.

A colleague and myself took our after-school photography program to the Flatlands Reformed Church Cemetery on Kings Highway for a photo-shoot. This is the same organization as Marble Collegiate and one of the oldest churches in Brooklyn.
Founded in 1654, Flatlands’ tradition and history is firmly grounded in the history of Dutch immigration and settlement and Dutch Reformed liturgy and theology. The Flatlands Reformed Church shares the distinction of being the oldest church in Brooklyn with Old First Reformed Church in Park Slope and the Flatbush Reformed Church on Flatbush and Church Avenues. The three congregations were founded on February 9, 1654. There are only two other Reformed Church congregations that are older than those in Brooklyn – the Collegiate Church in Manhattan and the North Dutch Church in Albany (later renamed First Church).
Walking through the tree-filtered late Autumn sunshine, you will recognize many of the names as street names in Brooklyn (i.e. Wyckoff). The sanctuary is a beautiful setting for the fall foliage and there are still a few roses in bloom late this November. Unfortunately there has been some vandalism.

Above is a marriage announcement for the same Teunis J. Bergen that was buried on February 27, 1922 (one of the later burials amongst many from the late 18th century and earlier). Below is a map of the Netherlands from around the time the first settlers came to Brooklyn (Breukelen).

It has been a really bad year for mice. Well, good for them but bad for us up in the Poconos. We bought the “humane” traps but since we aren’t there as often as we would like, those traps seem worse since they are trapped in a plastic box without water for days on end until they die of starvation. We found one victim and I was so upset I tried to nurse it back to health but to no avail.

The snap traps seem more humane since they usually die quickly. Can’t help feeling guilty about killing them. I justify it by their destruction of our food stores and the disease risk they pose since my immune system doesn’t need any further challenges. Don’t mind our bats since they eat mosquitos, but my matzo ball soup mix is verboten Mickey! Heard it was your birthday on November 18. Don’t be mad at me! And don’t tell Topo Gigio either.

With Vincenzo patiently waiting in the car after pointing out the sign. He’s NOT a silent partner.

How many humans crossed this narrow strait from the Motherland to colonize the world?
